Abstract Funding Acknowledgements Type of funding sources: Public hospital(s). Main source(s): International Medical Research and Development Fund Background Measuring pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) is essential for diagnosing hypertension. PVR can be estimated from a simple ratio tricuspid regurgitation velocity (TRV) to time-velocity integral flow through right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) (Abbas equation), but this relationship has been shown unreliable in patients with high PVR. Once elevated, there an increased pressure wave reflected the peripheral artery (PA). Echocardiographic assessment of pulmonary vascular resistance in pulmonary arterial hypertension

BACKGROUND Echocardiographic ratio of peak tricuspid regurgitant velocity to the right ventricular outflow tract time-velocity integral (TRV/TVI rvot) was presented as a reliable non-invasive method of estimating pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR). Studies using this technique in patients with moderate to high PVR are scarce. Left ventricular outflow tract time-velocity integral (TVI lvot) can...

Can echocardiographically estimated pulmonary arterial elastance be a non-invasive predictor of pulmonary vascular resistance?

INTRODUCTION Measurement of pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) is essential in evaluating a patient with pulmonary hypertension. MATERIAL AND METHODS Data from right heart catheterization (RHC) and echocardiograms performed within 90 days of each other on 45 non-consecutive adult patients were reviewed in this retrospective study. Patients were recruited using an assortment of strategies to ...

Characteristics of Pulmonary Vascular Remodeling in a Novel Model of Shunt-Associated Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension

BACKGROUND Establishing a shunt-induced pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) model in mice would be of great scientific value, but no such models have been reported to date. Here, we established a shunt-associated PAH in mice to investigate the characteristics of pulmonary vascular remodeling, which provides a new platform for the in-depth study of PAH associated with congenital heart disease ...

Vascular narrowing in pulmonary arterial hypertension is heterogeneous: rethinking resistance

In idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), increased pulmonary vascular resistance is associated with structural narrowing of small (resistance) vessels and increased vascular tone. Current information on pulmonary vascular remodeling is mostly limited to averaged increases in wall thickness, but information on number of vessels affected and internal diameter decreases for vessels of ...
